TPO-Free Gel Polish
All GEL.IT.UP gel polishes, base coats, top coats and builder gels are TPO-free. Since 1 September 2025, TPO has been banned in cosmetics sold in the EU. Here is what changed and what it means for your salon.
What is TPO?
TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) is a photoinitiator. It is the ingredient that reacts to UV/LED light and makes gel harden. For years it was used widely in gel polish because it cures very quickly.
Why was TPO banned in the EU?
TPO has been classified as toxic for reproduction (CMR category 1B). That classification led to it being added to the list of prohibited cosmetic ingredients. From 1 September 2025, products containing TPO can no longer be sold or used in the EU, and there is no transition period for existing stock.
What this means for nail technicians
- Check your stock. Gels containing TPO should no longer be used on clients in the EU.
- Read the label. TPO may be listed as "Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide" in the ingredients.
- Switch with confidence. Every GEL.IT.UP gel is already TPO-free, so there is nothing to replace.
Does TPO-free gel cure differently?
Yes, a little. TPO-free formulas use different photoinitiators, which need slightly more time under the lamp. Cure each layer for 60–90 seconds under a 48W UV/LED lamp. Under-cured gel is more likely to lift, and it is more likely to cause skin sensitivity.
